Steering problems

I have a 74 f100 and it has a steering problem. There is ALOT of play in the steering. I'm talking like the wheel moves probably 2-3 inches in either direction before the tires actually start to turn the car. The steering box was worn out so I replaced that. I know absolutely nothing about steering components so I don't even know whereelse/whatelse to look at. Could this be a problem with the column itself or do the tie rods have any affect on the play in the wheel? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the site.

You will find many helpful people on here.

Topic:

It isn't the column.
More likely the idler arm or the steering box.

But, all the steering components play a pivotal role in steering slop.

Check the drag link.

It is best to just have it inspected by a steering/suspension shop.

BTW,no offense meant.. A Lot is 2 words

Is it 2wd? If so, check the rag joint coupler between the column and the steering box. There should be a rubber/fiber/plastic disk in between the metal plates of the coupler. Usually that disk disintegrates and allows the slop. Have someone move the wheel back and forth and you may see the slop there.
