T-85 Overdrive question
I have a 56 F-100 with the heavy duty 3 speed transmission and 292 yblock. I wanted to swap the transmission out for an overdrive unit for better highway speeds and to reduce wear on the engine. I purchased a T-85 with overdrive from a salvage yard that was marked "64 F-100". I know that up to 64 it should work as long as I replace the bellhousing as well. The problem is that I have been reading about the difference in input shaft length and diameter between car and truck T-85's and the one I have sitting in my garage seems to match up closer to the car specs. The input shaft measured from the faceplate (not the flange) is a little over 6" long. It is about 1 1/8" in diameter. This has really got me worried that I will never be able to make this work with my truck. If anyone has any other info on what is required here or if I am completely wrong about the dimensions please let me know. I really appreciate any help.
Mike
