Sounds like an aftermarket conversion/upgrade.

Watch the automatic tranny (E4OD) they had a few problems with them and generally they are not the strongest tranny when it comes to towing anything.

Given the low milage chances the truck has not had any tranny upgrades done to eliminate the weak points.

Tranny work can get expensive $3,000 to $4,000, especially if you are going to beef it up a little.

If the truck is in A1 condition with that low of a milage then the $$$'s are probably about right.

1.0 The trannies had problems with the torque converter locks.

As you approach 38 mph the engine rpm should drop about 300 rpm as the torque converter locks. The converter should unlock at about 30 mph. (Make sure the truck is at normal operation temperature.

Once you are at 38 mph and the torque converter is locked, accelerate by applying throttle. If the Engine RPM suddenly jump about 200-300 rpm and you can hear a faint growl the torque converter lock is most likely slipping. This is bad news and you are in for a new torque converter and possibly a entire tranny rebuilt depending on how long this condition has already existed.

2.0 Weak electronic sensors.

Check to make sure both the speedometer and engine tachometer work and work smoothly. Any jerkyness or coming in late will cause tranny shift problems. If this has been going on for a while without correcting that could cause major damage.

3.0 Blinking OD light above OD button.

Check for a blinking OD light above the OD button. It usually indicates a transmission problem.

4.0 Do a code scan on the tranny using a code scanner.

You can pick up a code scanner at Wally Mart quite cheap. Easy to use. Common Code is 62, usually means $$ to fix as the tranny has to come out.

5.0 Check the oil.

Oil should be nice and pink, not brown, dirty, or smell burnt.

6.0 Drop the oil pan and check for metal on the magnet in the pan.

Dropping the pan is the best way to confirm is the tranny is mechanically sound. Any metal in the pan usually means something has been slipping or wearing, usually spells rebuilt.

Seb..
