anybody else get that annoying odor from the A/C when you first turn it on. i can turn on the vent without the odor. this has occured since the truck was new, so i don't beleive i have a leak. but i have been wrong once! bryan
no, no one answered my question either as you see. i have not had to charge the system since i bought the truck new. it was my first thought that "freon" was the culprit, but i don't believe it to be so.
Probably has mold in the tubing can be caused by running the AC on "Max" all the time. "Max" is meant to be used only for a short period of time to cool down the vehicle rapidly, once cooled it should then changed over to "normal".
Running it on max all the time recirculates the air in the cab, not exchanging any air from the outside so the moisture is traped. This moisture promotes mold grow in the tubes. Running "vent" brings in fresh air so you can't smell it as strong if at all.
Talk to a AC shop on ways to kill the mold without taking it all apart.
Not saying it is the cause of your smell, only you know your habits with the system but something to check for if you tend to use the Max setting all the time.
as i said in my first post, it did this even when it was new. but for the sake of discussion, lets say i have mold, can this mold survive our -30 to -40 Degree F winter weather here in minnesota?

I'm not sure about running on MAX to cool it down quickly becuase the air in the truck is hotter than the air outside. I do agree though the running it on MAX all the time is not a good thing. I use MAX when it is really hot or extremely humid and raining etc. I figure it is easier for the system to keep up if its not pulling in the hot and wet air.
There is a company called ID interdynamics that makes a product called Pure Air. It is a cleaner and deodorizer that you spray in the vents and the cowel. It should be available at O'Rielly, Advance, AutoZone. ID makes other AC do it yourself tools. I do know that the Pure Air works fairly well. I have used it on a few older cars with good results. Just follow the directions.
Roaches die from the cold. That is why they have to come inside. Without a source of heat they die quickly. Nuclear survival is only a myth. Some molds are able to survive the cold, but most will be dormant during the temperatures mentioned.
I believe that the smell the OP mentioned is the freon smell. At least that is the smell that I get in mine. It is a slightly acrid smell and a bit pungent.
