Hi, just got a 56 f100, pretty nice, restored years ago and needs some work now. Has a tbird 312 and runs good but when starting cold can hear the bearings clatter. Any thought on just replaceing the bearings and leaving the rest alone?

Thanks, Joee

Try the fat fender forum if it is a 56 however if you have a 66 you are in the right place.
I have never had any luck replacing only bearings with a ford . I would overhaul the lower end at very least.

Replacing just the mains would be a temporary fix at best although I did that myself years ago and the old engine just seemed to run forever. I sold it like that and the told the guy that bought it what I had done and he said he would rebuild the bottom end but never did. The right way would be to replace or turn the crank and use new mains and rod bearings. Actually, you can't stop there either because it probably needs a timing chain and gear, cam bearings, rings, a new cam, oil pump, head work, etc., etc., etc. It never ends.

Hi,Welcome to our little world.

Could it be the lifters and not the bearing that's making noise ?

If it's the lifters perhaps all they need are adjusting, just a thought.

What is the oil pressure? If it is not low could you go to a thicker oil during the warm months maybe a 20w-50? I see no problems with replacing the bearings as long as you are talking about getting the crank turned down and not just replacing the bearings.

It ain't the bearings if it only does it cold, unless they are just marginal enough that oil pressure quiets them down. But as noted above you'd have low oil pressure across the board. Also agree that the oil pump needs to be checked out, bearings usually fail because the pump does.

Oh, and welcome!
