My dad has a '99 7.3 and it's stalling so much that it's too unreliable to drive. I was wondering if anyone could help us troubleshoot the problem.
His brother has the '97 7.3 and his is doing the same thing. I believe they both started doing it on the same day, or within a couple of days of one another.
My dad thinks it's due to the heat since it's been exceptionally hot lately. Once it stalls, they have to let them sit for a while and they'll start up again, only to stall again once they drive a short distance.
I read another post about the 7.3 stalling due to heat, and we were trouble shooting the fuel pump/filter, but the filter seems to have fuel even after a stall, before the key is turned/the pump is activated again.
Based on the description, a mechanic at the Dodge garage suggests that it's the cam position timer. My dad wants to try to verify this, but he also skeptical that his and his brother's truck are having that particular issue at the same time.
One thing to note, they both get their fuel at the same place.
From what i've heard The Cam Position Sensor can cause this and i have actually been in a Ford with a bad CPS, the Powerstroke is famous for this and it is possible that both of the trucks could have gotten the problem at the same time.
EDIT: Also the tach is affected when this is bad, when the truck stalls try starting it again and i think if the tach doesn't move, then the CPS is bad

CPS definitely one place to look. CPS can cause all types of symptoms and varies depending on the situation, but they case stalling/inability to start/bucking/poor idle, all types of things. They go out all the time, could just be coincidence that the two went at the same time.
Also - bad fuel is a good reason for concern. Diesels are very picky about their fuel...are any of the "water in fuel" lights coming on with either of the trucks? Remove the fuel cap and sniff for gasoline, this is a common problem and sometimes stations mess up and contaiminate their diesel with gasoline..my dad got bad fuel in his truck once, truck would run like a bat out of hell uphill but would sputter and quit or run at rough idle on level planes...turns out the gasoline that he was contaiminated with was "floating" on top of the diesel that had previously been in his tank.
It should be fairly easy to tell if you've got fuel contaimination, you should be able to smell the difference.
I would be leaning in the direction of the CPS also. You could get one and try it, if it is not that you will have an extra one to carry with you. If it hasn't gone out yet, chances are good that it will. Most of us carry a spare in our trucks along with a 10mm socket and ratchet, just to be ready for when it does. Don't know if the 97s and 99s use the same sensor. I don't know of heat causing that much trouble. Good luck and keep us posted.
You could always pull the cps and clean the contacts but would suggest always carrying a spare. You can get on ebay around $50 or $60 dollars.

In a seperate post, we've all been discussing how the heat actually makes our trucks run BETTER! So I have my doubts the heat has anything to do with it. I believe 97 and 99 use the same CPS.
