i have a '99 f250 superduty with a v10, automatic tranny. it started studdering/chattering in 4th gear at low rpms. every other gear it runs fine but as soon as it gets into 4th and i start to give it some gas it starts acting up, especially when going uphill. i have a friend whos a mechanic that is familar with superduties and he said its the torque converter. nothing against him i just wanted to see if anyone else had an opinion.
Sounds like you have torque shudder. This happens under light load or mild acceleration in 4th usually around 40-50mph. Kind of feels like a rain grooved road. or small rumble strips. Does not happen under hard acceleration or coasting since the converter unlocks under those conditions, I assume this is true with your model year. Mine is a 94.
This is the lockup clutch slipping.
Sometimes a fluid change will fix the problem. When you change the fluid, inspect the contents of the pan for lots of clutch debris(pepper flakes) or metal dust. Also check color and smell of the fluid, Should be red and chemically. Brown/black/pink and or burnt is bad.
If this is left alone it probably will get worse and overheat the fluid which will lead to more problems like harsh shifting and eventually the need for a rebuild.
I have also read that it could be the MLPS(?) sensor being out of adjustment. But I have no experience here.
well i wouldnt compare it with small rumble strips....it is really studdering, stumbiling almost like it is just slipping. another idea is it could possibly be a coil on its way out.
If the converter clutch is badly worn it could slip fairly hard. But I would think by that point you would have signs of overheating the fluid. Usually the shudder is pretty mild to start and gets worse over time.
Maybe it is the sensor on the side of the tranny is out of adjustment. I have read that it too can cause shudder.
I would think a coil would set an engine code and cause the check engine light to light up. Usually the CEL will flash when it detects a misfire. After a few repeats the CEL will stay on. Do you have any codes set, ie the CEL lit up or the overdrive indicator flashing?
no i dont have any codes yet...i was reading that there is a misfire counter and it has to reach a certain number before the cel will come on. im gonna go by mu buddys shop later and see if his scan tool will pick that up, i only have a cheap on to read the codes with.
