I have a '92 Ranger with a M5OD Tranny. It locked up while driving. After pushing in the clutch and shifting to the neutral position and releasing the clutch, it was still in 4th gerar in the neutral position. Does anyon know if changing the syncros and bearings in the tranny would fix this problem. None of the gears loo damaged on burned etc... nothing smells burned. Even the bearings look good so far. I'm trying to do this myself as I don't have a lot of $$$ and don't want to replace parts ***** nilly and spend more money than needed. Also, the truck has 175,000 miles on it and I don't want to go crazy on it. Thanks for any responses.
If it was still physically in gear when you shifted to neutral, look at the shifter mechanism. There is probably some physical damage to the shift forks or rods. 4th gear is direct drive and doesn't actually involve any rotating gears, when you shift you simply lock the input and output shafts to one another. There is an off chance that the bearing that the input and output shafts are joined together with may have seized. But I would check for proper operation of the shift mechanisms first.
Thanks! I called a shop and they said that the plugs for the shift fork shats commonly leak. The fact that there was little or no fluid in it I was told that the gears probably melded to the shaft. Not what I wanted to hear. Anyway, I'll take it apart and see what we find out.
Sadly, yep probably right. The shift rail plugs leak when you're driving (they don't when you're sitting still). Big problem on these trucks. Fluid level gets low, and you can imagine from there.
Would this cause it to become harder to sift in through the gate. because lately my truck has becoming really hard to shift, i didn't nitoce untill my gf couldn't throw it into second last night and i had to shift with my left arm. i had to throw it in first and throw everything i had into it to get it past the gate. i drove it home,(went to a rodeo), and noticed that it was harder even for my right arm, than when i first had it.
