Rear leaf spring issues
I was doing my monthly inspection of the underside of our '00 X, and also planning on taking some measurements for some traction bars I'm going to fabricate, when I found the source of a "clunk" that we hear when coming to a stop, and accelerating from a stop. It appears that the passenger's side rear leaf spring front eye bushing is worn, broken, mangled, or something to that effect. I noticed the spring on that side was off center to the bracket, and is actually hitting the bracket upon braking and acceleration. I had the wifey put the truck in gear (with the ebrake on, and wheels chocked of course!) while I checked for movement. There is a little movement when putting it in gear at idle, so I can only assume that it's moving a lot under braking and acceleration. I also put a prybar on it, and while it doesn't flop around, there's still excessive movement.
So, it looks like I'll be doing the rear springs sooner than I thought. I've located some V and B code springs from a 2000 F250 at a local recycler. The truck only had 30k on it, and the springs look nearly new, so I'm going to get those. $50 per spring beats any price I've seen around my area.
I'm planning on installing the rears first, because of this issue, and I'll do the fronts when I have time.
My main point to the post is to help anyone that may have the same clunking noise. Check your rear springs!
