Squealing belt

I've got a work trk that has a squealing fan belt that will not give up. Alighnment is good, belt is new. It seems to ride over one groove and then drop back. Any ideas? Belt dressing shuts it up for about 30 sec. After about an hour of use it quiets down a little, but not completely. Let it sit for a few and its back. This is getting annoying.

a dab of dielectric silicon paste on the belt will last much longer than belt dressing

Count the number of ribs on the belt and the number of groves on pulleys, there are 2 different belts I believe.

I wouldn't do that, you're just masking the problem....the belt is still slipping!

Check alignment of power steering pump this pulley can be out of alignment if it was installed too far/not far enough onto pump. Usually, PS pump shaft should be flush with the pulley but not always. BTW: there is a special tool to do this, don't hammer on it.

Remove belt and check tensioner for smooth operation and good tension throughout the range of movement. These things get a notchy feel to them at the fully extended position (belt stretched).

Check idler pulley(s) for excessive wear.

Once you have solved the probelm with the miss alignment, belt jumping one groove, the only way to 100% guarantee no more squeal is to do the following:

Remove the old belt, take a wire hand brush and brush all of the drive pulleys and idlers, then install a NEW belt.

What happens is; when a belt slips it leave small pieces of rubber on the pulley and it heats the belt and pulley, glazing the rubber of the belt and the rubber that is left on the pulley, making both slick. Once this happens, the old belt will always slip no matter what you do. If you reuse an old belt that has been slipping you can decrease the slipage but not eliminate it completely. The pulleys and belt are driven by friction and need a good griping surface.
