88 150 Ac

I have a 88 150. The AC is not cold. The compressor comes on for 2-3 seconds, then goes off for 5 seconds, then comes on for 2-3 seconds, then goes off for 5. Same thing over and over. I hotwired the compressor, and it stayed on, but did not get cold. I tried to put freon in it, but it would only take about 1/4 of a can, then would not take any more. Any Ideas? THX!

Thanks alot guys for all your help, i figured that the truck would make atleast 15 for ripping around. But it was good to talk with the experts on this one. Who knows, maybe in that particular year the trucks could have been gas guzzlers. But, it's good to know that it won't drink gas like one of the early hummers. so again thanks for all your help

still sounds liekits low on freon since fords will cycle on and off when low , i have had that many times on my fords inthe past, i have had some that take freon real slow and i did the no no of turning the can upside down to force more in, yeahi know shouldnt do that, but has always worked out so far fo rme , knock on wood, you might spend a lil and takeit to a shop and have them check and see whatthe feaon charge in the unit is at, other than that not sure since you hotwired it and it didnt get cold which would eliminate any sensing that would shut it off.
