I started my 04 PSD today and noticed that after I let the oil pressure come up I went to take off and there was very little throttle response, and was sluggish until I got going a little faster then it cleared up. Is this and EGR problem? I have been tossing the idea around about un hooking it and giving it a try. would doing this solve my problem or is it more involved? Thanks in advance for any advice!!
That isn't consistent with an EGR problem. If the truck was cold the engine strategy could do this. You have a few sensors that like the EBP that may need checked.
If your EGR was stuck open a bit because of carbon, unplugging it wouldn't do a thing, and it should turn on the CEL if it can't close completely. Normally you'd see a lot of black smoke out the tail pipe if it were the EGR stuck. If it only happens for about 2 or 3 minutes right after a cold start, I'd suspect you have some fuel injector issues.
I believe that this is normal. It's the truck not letting you misuse it until you get the temp close to operating temperature. I'm sure that after a couple of minutes you are okay, right?
My 04 with 41,000 miles has developed exactly the same problem over the last few months. Starts right up after sitting overnight, but accelerates slower than a snail for about 10 seconds and then picks up and runs great all day. Somewhere in this forum I found a problem similar to this and there was a response that the injectors were dropping out and to check the WDS function and power balance. I have no idea what all that means but I just took mine in to Miramar Ford in San Diego as I don't trust the local dealer. I had changed the EGR valve, but that did'nt help. Also I don't think this is normal as we had a 03 F550 6 litre work truck with 173,00 miles that was really abused and it never acted like that.
They shouldn't perform that much different when they're cold or hot. Injector stiction mainly only happens after an overnight cold-soak. After that they normally perform perfect untill the next morning.
Sounds like you might have had some injector(s) fail. Had this on one of my trucks, the dealer at first couldn't find anything wrong with it. A year later (yes a full year) I brought it back in for a recall and told them to keep it until they found out why the thing basically wouldn't move until it warmed up. Lo and behold, this time they found 3 bad injectors (morons--I no longer go to this dealer for service), kept it over night to double check, found another the next morning. Truck ran like it had a new engine in it when we got it back. Started doing the same thing a couple weeks ago. It is at a different dealer now.
It also had a very unique noise when cold. Running at cruising speed, no load, it 'hiccupped' or sounded like it was a fish gulping for air. Lost power for a moment and then kept on going. Never heard a noise like that from an engine before.
