Serpetine Belt Change 98 4.6
I have an Expedition, but the F-150 guys seem to offer a bit more insight.
Anyway after procrastinating for a couple of years, I decided to change out my original serpentine belt with 154k miles on it. I never saw anything wrong with the other one, I just have a couple of long trips to take this summer.
Anyway, I used my 1/2 ratchet and put it in the idler arm pully. I was under the impression that a nut was going to , loosening the pully. However when I added my two foot pipe for leverage, the entire pully moved and the belt obviously loosened. I realized quickly that no nut was going to loosen. Got my son to keep the tension loose and I removed the belt. After 15-20 minutes of figuring out the loop to put it back, we did the same thing in reverse. I gingerly watched my fingers, knowing that if he slipped, I could lose one.
Here's the kicker: the original OEM belt had no , wasn't too dry and looked like it could go a long way.
I replaced it with a Gator Belt made by Goodyear from Autozone... about 25 dollars.
Don't know what an OEM belt from Ford would cost but 8 years, 154k is pretty darn good. This car gets a 75 percent mix of highway, 25 percent around town.
On to cleaning up the throttle body.
