add on AC

Hey,
Anyone have any tips, ideas, suggestions on adding AC to my 68 F100? Are add on AC units still available? Don't want to go pirating around in junk yards looking for "used" systems to pull out. Any feedback would be helpful.

I've been looking to do the same myself, haven't had much luck finding an aftermarket kit, even in JC Whitney. But I was told by someone doing the same thing that if you have a 4 speed as I do the factory equipment located in the cab will interfere with the shifter. Haven't checked it out myself yet but it's something to think about.

I've heard of this outfit called VINTAGE AIR located out west...I'm sure they can help or put you on to an outfit to fit your rig. The aftermarket add ons of the 67-72 f series were of a slim design, they hugged the bottom of the dash and worked pretty good . My uncle put one in his 68 in 1970 and paid about 150 bucks installed from the local pep boys...think it was air cool or some wierd name like that...I'll ask to see if he still has any paperwork on that unit....

Tim,

Yes, Vintage Air can hook you up with anything you need in the way of heaters/AC units for your truck. In fact, the '67-'72 F-series is one of their most popular kits. I don't know what the prices are, but here's where you can get ahold of someone there:

Hope this helps, good luck!

Since we are on the subject on A/C. When i bought my truck the guy said all i would need was a compressor and that the hoses where behind the seat. my question is if i do get a compressor how would i clean all the rust out of the Evaporator? would the refregerant clean it out or am i gonna have to buy a new Evaporator. any one know where i can find a compressor and condenssor over here in the southeastern part of the country?

Hey Mike, I found out in working with A/C parts, it's best to replace suspect parts with new or aftermarket types such as everco, etc. from auto parts stores, try NAPA or Pep Boys, buy the counter person a coffee and explain your problems.
buying new evap. or even a new condenser will give you peace of mind, and will set-up your system for the new RC-134a freon replacement(remember the enviroment?) Once the a/c system has been open to the atmosphere, it will pick up all nasty kinds of contaminants, and to get the system to cool down properly, REPLACE THE SUSPECT PARTS TO KEEP YOUR COOL.
