I guess turning it off to dry it out might help, but in 40 yrs of driving AC cars, I have never had to do that.
The only time I had any smell from AC was on an LTD that wasn't draining properly. I had to poke out the drain from under the car and clean the coil to solve the problem. He might have some debri laying in the plentum and getting wet. Pulling the fan and the resister assembly gives pretty good access to the back side of the coil. Might be able to vacumn, and blow the coil clean. Maybe spray some cleaner on the coil to help the water run off?
Good luck Frank
To add to the other posts there is a product available to spray into the system to kill any mildew which may be the source of the odour. Sorry , the name escapes me but I did purchase it at a local parts store. If I find the can that I had I will let you know. Our GM had this problem and one of the fixes according to the dealer TSB was what subford had suggested. I had the same problem despite the drain working fine . I used the spray a couple of times and the problem cleared up and for some reason never returned. On the truck I will get a whiff on startup the odd time but nothing like the car had.

microbiocide is the stuff that kills algae and mold. They use it in cooling water, vent ducts, and air filters to kill a whole bunch of nasty little microbes and microrganisms.
Q: Why is ### MicroBiocide necessary for HVAC systems?
HVAC systems are the perfect environment for microorganisms -- such as bacteria, algae and mold -- to grow. Furthermore, HVAC systems spread these harmful contaminants, which may cause odors, damage to surfaces and toxic byproducts, to living and working environments. ###MicroBiocide controls contaminants that often cause poor indoor air quality and "sick building syndrome" at the source -- the HVAC system. Also, ### MicroBiocide prevents damage caused by plugged drains by eliminating slime deposits.
I found the can I was talking about. It is in a spray can and it is made by a company called WYNN'S.On the label it say "Fresh Air".The can is a few years old but here is the number if anyone is interested 1-800-668-5626.
there used to be this stuff called "Friggy fresh" don't know if its availiable anymore, but turn on your fan and then spray it into the heater air intake.
