Hey all I have a problem. Now that hot weather is here I have a serious vapor locking problem. I have a 79 f-150 4x4 with a mild built 400. I am not running any emissions stuff. I have the factory style mechanical pump with factory type(all new stuff) lines and an edelbrock 1406 carb. When It vapor locks and dies the fuel filter between the fuel pump and carb is empty, let it set for a few minutes and dump cool water on the pump and it will run fine for a while longer. I have already routed the fuel line as far away from all heat sources as I can. I am thinking about an electric fuel pump with a return line to the tank. Any suggestions? what kind of electric fuel pump should I run? Oh yeah the engine temp stays at 180 in 95 degree weather so the truck is not overheating, need input on keeping the gas cooler and pumping. Thanks.
MMarty....I had the exact problem years ago with my stock 78 f-150, 400 engine............The thing would vapor lock after driving 20 miles or so in the mid summer heat...Would happen when slowing to make a turn or stop.....Yeah, everyone said get an electric for a backup with the manual fuel pump...Did that, seemed to work until around three years later the dam electric pump gave out........After that, I cleaned the engine compartment especially where the fuel lines come to the manual pump......Installed a new manual pump, haven't had the vapor lock thing since........
This summer I had what I thought was a vapor lock problem. After driving 15 miles in the heat, there would be no gas to carb. I replaced the mechanical pump, with no change. Then replaced all the rubber lines - turned out there is a small section of rubber hose along the frame rail (near the back of the cab) that had a crack in it. So when it warmed up, it would suck air and I would run out of fuel. Replaced 4" of hose and no problems since. Look over all the hoses. There usually is no need for a electric pump and return line on a mild motor in a daily driver.
Great........A crack in the rubber hose sucking air.....A friend had the same problem once with a volkswagen rabbit.....Thought it was the fuel pump, for some reason he installed some clear plastic line between the carb and pump, then seen the air bubbles....Once shut off the split rubber line before the fuel pump did not leak.....Glad you found the problem and I will remember the split rubber line thing................
