Trans and Axle Codes

Hello,

New to this site and new to Ford Trucks. Someone was giving away a 86 F250 with a 460 that needed an assortment of minor mechanical work. I finally got it whipped into solid mechanical shape and was looking to find some info on the tranny/axle setup.

The Door sticker lists Type F257, Trans P, Axle 35, Spring F K

I think it was a factory tow setup, the owner used to do alot of towing out west, it is geared down pretty low- 4 speed manual tranny. I will only be doing some moderate towing occasionally and wanted to see if there were any options to switch to a different ratio rear end or a tranny with an OD to get a little better milage when I get it on the highway.

Thanks for any advice - lots of good info on this site!

Phil

Code 33 is essentially the same axle with a 3.54:1 ratio which would probably suit your needs better. You'll need a speedometer gear to match.
