The guage reads full all the time....i know it isn't because i have had to walk twice now, i guess it's time to fix it !
What is the problem with this system?
It is a 6 volt positive ground.
Any pointers to save me some trouble shooting time ???
I'm going to guess that you have a short in the wire between the gage and the gas tank sender. The gage measures resistance. The sender has less resistance when full. The gage is reflecting a "no resistance" condition, so the sender isn't even in the circuit it is reading. If that wire was shorted direct to ground, the gage would read full. The short may also be across the terminals of the sender, which would do the same thing.
Use a multimeter to first find out if the sender is OK. Then do a continuity check on the gage wire to the sender. Of course, also check the sender ground wire.
Check also to verify that the float is not hung up on the side of your tank.
To test the gauge, (this applies to the OIL and TEMP too), apply 1.5 Volts DC across the terminals. The needle should rise to the center of the gauge. That is what that little black mark is for at the bottom center of the gauge face. The needle should cover that mark or be pretty close.
