Need some Advise

Ok I just bought an 02 Ex Limited v10 3.73 rear end and just returned from Myrtle Beach the gas milage was 14.5 on the way down and 13.5 on the way back, which i didnt think was to bad. Now i getting ready to pull a 9000 lb camper to Virgina and was wondering if there is anything i need to know before i go. I just got the oil changed and im sure my mpg is going to drop alot. As for towing do i need to turn the overdrive off or can i leave it on. Any advise would be appreciated.

Oh i forgot the ex has 50,000 miles on it

Thanks

Leave OD on unless it's hunting (or switching back and forth between gears) often.

Have a good trip and make sure you air up your rear tires for the added weight.

Since you just bought it and it is at 50K, I would change the tranny fluid. Not a must do before the trip but in the next few months. Your mileage towing 9k will be around 10 or so.

Enjoy it and welcome!

Yeah, with the 3.73 axle ratio you will most likely never stay in OD while pulling 9000 lbs. I have a 2000 Ex, V10, 4x4, 4.10 axle ratio and 125k miles. I pull a 31' trailer that weighs about 7200 lbs. On my last trip I could not stay in OD and maintain 65mph so my subsequent economy was about 7.5 mpg. I need a little more torque at cruising speed to help me stay in OD at 65 mph. I'm working on getting a complete Banks system some time this year.

I went to MN (300 mile journey) and was in OD pretty much all the way except for some steep hills. Of course, I have a BTS trans and a DP-Tuner 60HP Tow tune doing 70 all the way or better.

The 7.3 PSD will hold in OD much better than the V10.

PSD = PowerStroke Diesel

OD = Overdrive, (D or 4th gear in our case)

MN = Minneapolis

Actually, DP Tuner is Jody Tipton, one of the best tuners of the 7.3 PSD. He also does 6.0 and gas tuning. He now offers a 16 position chip! Here is a link http://www.dp-tuner.com/ .

He just started offering tunes for the SCT fairly recently. He can flash a tune to your PCM, burn them on a chip or supply programs for the SCT.
