Question Normal boost range

I just installed my gauges and all of my limits are pretty well memorized, but I need to find out a ballpark figure for the boost. I am totally stock except for the Kwik filter and CCV mods. I haven't done anything with the wastegate and at WOT I get about 15psi and rapidly approacy 950 on the egt. I would probably hold it WOT a little longer but she excellerates really quickly. The exhaust is stock for now so I was just wondering if the 15 is normal and should I disconnect the wastegate? What additional numbers should I see then? Thanks for all the experienced advice...Dave

you might get a few more pounds but I think you are pretty normal for a basically stock truck.

i am assuming 950 for pre-turbo (up-pipe or manifold) and not in the downpipe? maximum temps for the EGT is 1200-1250 im sure you know about that. i normally run anywhere from 500-600 on the flat, and anywhere from 750-900 pulling hills while still in OD. i amazed myself today on the way into town, it's about a 7% grade for about 1/4 mile, i start out at the bottom at 55 and try (very easily) to hold 55mph, and by the end it's around 1000 while i am on the 50hp program. im sure if i clicked it back to stock it would shift out of OD. even on the 140 program the same results (less pedal but more fuel) i can hit 1050* easily. i need a new IC.

boost normally stays below 5psi for driving, and accelerating (in stock, ) , it gets to about 10 psi unless i mash it hard. you should be able to peak around 16-18 psi at full load with what you have.. disconnect the wastegate actuator line and see how you like it. plug the elbow on a intercooler boot clamp though, it will create a small boost leak otherwise. with the wastegate disconnected, you should find some faster spooling and come on boost sooner. you should peak around 18 still but it will come on alot faster.

Thumbs up I should have given more details

Sorry about being vague on the question. I have the pyro "Pre turbo tapped into the drivers side manifold". You are correct too about crusing straight and level (old flying term) I see at about 65 MPH, 2200 or so RPM with my 4:10 rearend dually. I have noticed the boost is only about 3-4 depending upon little grades in the road, but it's pretty flat here in South Carolina. The EGT also stays steady at 550-650 again depending upon a slight grade. I have noticed too something someone mentioned a while back about oil pressure. The idiot gauge in the dash is set for about 7 psi? It moves to the "normal" range which is 7 psi and NEVER varies. I have 55-60 stone cold at idle and accelerating goes to 65 or so and stabilizes at 55 at cruise...when I come to a stop, and it comes down to an idle, it drops to 25. Slightly tapping the throttle brings it back up to 40 or so and at cruise is stable at 55. I just changed the oil today and haven't taken her out yet, but just idleing it has already turned the oil black. I would assume this is normal for a diesel? I run Rotella 15/40 with the Napa gold filter. I took the plunge and added more than the standard 3 gauges just to monitor the oil pressure and water temp. The tranny gauge is backordered and will be in next weekend.....Thanks for any tips or things I should watch out for as far as gauge readings.....Dave

when you drain your oil, you are only draining about 75% of it. the rest (about 4quarts) is left in the HPOP reservoir and lines, and in the cylinder heads/injectors. the old oil is pumped out and then mixed with new, and it gives the look of black oil, when all it is doing is spreading out it's colorfulness among it's new oil friends.

WOW that was such a good explaination, even my blonde wife even understood it!! I didn't realize that there was that much oil still in the system but I guess there is really no way to evacuate everything. Thanks for the insight.......
