Just getting started with a 1973 F-250. The rig needs brakes and I was told by another 3/4 Ton owner of around the same year, that to replace shoes and wheel cylinders on F-250 rear drums that you need to pull the axles. Is this true?? Tried to search the forums already with no luck. Thanks for your help.
The 250's w/ a D60 axle had full-floating axles so they have to be pulled to service the brakes. My 250 SC has the HD brakes - they are a bit smaller in dia. but wider. I'd take an old set in with you when you get the new ones.
about the seals, make sure that the hub where the seal seals in in good shape and not grooved, mine was from years of rock dust, had to put a sleeve over the hub...........a bearing distributor has the correct size
the hub has to be cleaned and the sleeve pressed on with loctite to seal it, it's only about .010 wall sleeve, and it is tight
also, get all new hardware and while in there replace the e-brake cables, they are probably sticky if they work at all
after getting all replaced, I was supprised how good the brakes are, you have to be careful not to lock-up all the wheels, have thought about how to install anti-lock, but just thought about it, no plans to do it
