my cousin has a 86 e-150. it has the 302 5.8L. I want to taqke the altenator out and put it in my 92 f-150. i figured this would work because they are the same engine. are they the same or similar? All i need is for it to get me like 20 miles home from my uncles. thanks.
Dan
Well, if you only want to go 20 miles, you **MAY** get that far off a fresh battery alone with no alternator. Just don't use any lights, radio or A/C. But that will only work if you have a good, new, fresh battery for it.
I think you may have your engines mixed up. A 302 should be a 5.0, and a 351 will be a 5.8. If they really do both have the same engine, you should be okay, to the best of my knowledge.
the alt may be different. look into doing a 3g upgrade. you can find these from J yards cheap and that will outperform what you currently have. its common to find 130amp ones. do a search on the web for 3g altenator upgrade and also check out www.fordfuelinjection.com for additional info
go to an autoparts website. Put in the info for your cousin's vehicle and get the alternator part numbers. Then, ut in the info for your truck and compare part numbers. If same part number, alternators are inter-change-able.
i agree, i have drove many miles when ne ccessary with justthe battery , andis a good idea to upgrade as long as yo uhave it off , many of the 73 amp or so alt that ford uses have a real bad problem of catching on fire , the vehicle doesnt even have to be running fo rthis to happen, they have a pro blem withbeing built to light with internals, i can speak from experience on this one , and the shop that did the upgrade for me has had many fords do this.
