i was just curious about a leak problem i keep having. everytime i get under my 96 F350 there is always drips of fluid hangin off my 5 speed. however on the same hand i have NEVER seen any fluid on the pavement, even when left for a week or so in the same spot. so obviously it's not a bad leak. i was just curious if there was a problem area with the ZF that I need to check on first as to where the leak is. also it seems the fluid is everywhere on the outside case on the crossmember, prolly from driving at high speeds the fluid gets moved around but it doesn't seem to ever be localized.
To try and loacte the leak spray the trans with brake cleaner, wear saftey glass and DON'T get it in your eyes. This will degrease the trans and remove any old fluid. Then check to make sure the trans is full of fluid.
I assume you know it is not diesel fuel, but trans fluid or oil, correct?
I have seen leaking fuel pumps that ran down the back of the block to the bell housing and onto the trans. Poeple brought the truck in and said the trans was leaking. When I checked, it was fuel. I then pulled the engine cover and found the valley full of fuel from a leaking hose, leaking filter housing or fuel pump. Since it is not fuel try the following.
Remove the clutch inspection plate and see if there is fluid inside the bell housing, if so front seal on trans is leaking. If there is motor oil in the bell housing, rear seal on engine is leaking. Then the fluid is running out the drain hole and being forced back by the air as you drive. Re-install clutch inspection plate.
Check you trans for a couple of days and you should find the leak if it was not from the bell housing area. Look at the reverse light switch plug, PTO block off plate, fill and drain plugs, case seams, transfer case joint, etc.

pffft been there done that and it HURTS! lol
i am 98% sure it isn't diesel fuel but i will doubly check that tom. i dont run offroad diesel and the liquid is reddish in color so i am ASSuming its tranny fluid.
thanx for the response, that gives me a good place to start
My 97 does the same thing. I have tracked mine down to the cover plate on the side. Guess the old gasket just doesn't seal any more. I'll be correcting mine when I change the fluid.
