I just bought a 1970 f250 and have one slight problem.i started it after it had been sitting for two years,i was impressed when it cranked up right away but after it died i tried to restart it and i noticed smoke coming from the instrument panel and then it wouldnt turn over from the ignition.i can jump it directly from the solenoid but not from the ignition switch.i have traced every wire and can not find any burnt wires blown fuses and i used a test light on the solenoid studs and cant get power from them but it is a new solenoid. i dont have any dash lights head lights it blew thw dome light bulb.the circuit board on the back of the instrument panel has a severly burnt section.i do have powert if i bypass the solenoid and run power straight into the i&s wires i am completely stumped and any info would be very appreciated.please help! thanks

Well lets go to the basics, and start from there. First go to the starter siloniod, there is where the interiour gets it hot feed from. On the side of the starter siloniod mounted on the inside right fender, where the main positive battery hooks up, you should find at least two large 10 guage wires coming off the silonoid. Ok take a light tester and check to see if they are hot, now go about 6 to 12 inches further and check againg to see if it is hot, what you are checking is the fusable link, it probaly blew when the short happened inside. You can buy premade fuseable links, or make one yourself. be sure to stay with the same size wire. Before you replace the link, trace the main lead back to the inside of the cab, you need to find what caused the short in the first place, check the ignition switch, and the headlights. You may have to remove the instrument cluster (speedo) to inspect the wires in the harness.
Check this out and let us know what you find, and we can help you along. Good luck
If I remember right the burnt grid on the back of the instrument cluster could be the problem. Try replacing that and see what happens. Besides that I would also check the ign switch and the light switch.
The instrument cluster or grid has nothing to do with the starting of the vehicle. You could remove the instrument cluster altogether and it would still start. The problem lies in no postive feed into the dash, thus comes the suggestion to check the fusable links.
