Changing Fuel Filter
How would I change the fuel filter on a 2001 F350 with the 5.4liter? According to the service manual, we need special tools - it also said that about my 2001 Taurus and I didn't need special tools.
It slips under(I think) the locking collar of the fuel filter in and outlets. This allows you to get the hose off the connection. I don't think you can remove the hose without the tool.
Fortunately most part stores have them. I got my set of 4 different size tools for something like $5 ?
The hard part of changing the filter is that at least on my 94 F250, the filter is in a spot where you can't get your hands around it so leverage is a problem and getting the tool in there is hard.
Also when reinstalling the hoses to the filter be careful you don't push in/dent the end caps. The end caps of the filter are a bit flimsy and because it is ahrd to get your hands in there, you get tempted to force the hose on, which can cause the end cap to dent. At least on my 94.
Let the truck sit over night to relieve pressure. Be prepared for some gas leakage, maybe a cup when you remove the filter. A fire extinguisher would be a safe precaution. If you have a golf tee or a bolt you can plug the hose from the tank so it doens't keep dripping.
Good Luck,
Jim Henderson
Yes, it is for the V10, but it is my understanding that the 5.4L and V10 use the same fuel filter on the '99-'04 SD models. So same procedure...
Hope this helps...
