What happened?

I have an 05 F250 with 14,000 miles on it. Everything has been perfect until this morning. Driving out of my neighborhood my truck started shaking, died, and would not start back up. I had it towed to the dealership and they are supposed to check it out tomorrow. I am new to diesels and the 6.0, so I don't have a clue what happened or how bad it is. Anybody have any speculation as to what happened and how bad it might be?

From your previous posts it looks like you lost oil pressure to your injectors. Let us know what you find out.

Same thing happened with mine last week, except I was driving on the interstate (05 F250 Lariat CC w/18,800 miles). Dealer finally got to it this past Monday and replaced the #1 injector. Runs like a top again.

Favorite places to lose high pressure oil pressure on an '05 is the top o-ring on a fuel injector. For some reason, the o-ring retainer breaks.

I just spoke to the dealership and they said it needs a new fuel pump. I'm not questioning that it does, but wondering if this has happened to anybody else. Does this sound right? What would cause the fuel pump to go bad after 14,000 problem free miles?

Well now you know. Fuel pumps are not a problem, but anything can fail. Thanks for the update and this is an easier fix than if you lost oil pressure to the injectors.

I hope it didn't go to Rockwall Ford....

They are the idiots that put 10-30 oil in my truck. Haven't been back there since that happened. Metro Ford Truck Sales does any warranty work I need now. Big truck guys seem to be more knowledgable.

The same people must work their showroom as well. I stopped by there twice. The first time and the last time.

My dealer also cautioned me on 15 40 oil unless temps were high and pulling at over 90 degrees. They routinely only use 10 30. Apparently they are awaiting an update that pre fires injectors and fires them after shut down. Something about injectors locking. 15 40 is only ok 90 degree F operation. See your manual, 10 30 is good for - 30 to + 90 all conditions.

I am so getting a Fumoto and doing it myself.

Manual states 10-30 is acceptable oil weight if you're not towing anything heavy.

I just returned from a 600 mile trip to and from Lake Havasu (Arizona/Colorado River area) from Los Angeles in the most horrible scrotching heat (around 115+ degrees). Before the trip I changed the oil and used 15/40 Rotella (again), and ran great. Thanks to this site, I got to use my Fumoto I installed last oil change. What a great device! I wasn't towing, but I passed quite a few 6.0's pulling 5ers in that heat, not to mention the stop and go traffic up Cajon pass in Friday PM traffic.

It is rare to have a fuel pump die all together. I've replaced probably a dozen or so fuel pumps that were dropping pressure under a load, and only 2 or 3 that had no pressure at all.
