In september i will be going on vacation to colorado. I live in KC. last time i drove my truck out there it was a dog....just flat out slow. What are some things i can do to help it out a little better in the high altitude this time around? Since last time i have upgraded to duel exhaust and a 302TB. Thanks for any help.
I live with that problem all the time at 6500ft elevation.
If you truck is EFI, there is not much you can do since you already upgraded your exhaust. The fact is, when you get a mile high you only have 80% as much air as your truck gets to breathe in KC. The mixture remains the same if everything is working right so your power will be down about 20%.
i guess i wouldnt have this problem if my truck was mass air. Prolly be to much trouble to try and get a high altitude program for it. Unless i had a chip so i could just "flip on" a high altitude program
A fuel filter kept me from getting to the top of Pikes Peak. It ran like a old dog. As I was driving back towards the right coast, thru the planes on level ground I had to keep pressing harder and harder on the gas pedal. WTF? After fretting and trouble shooting we found a clogged gas filter. Another year, another rig, same mountain range, heading to the left coast, same feeling. This time I knew what it was in a flash. Made a U turn down hill to a parts house and fixed it on the spot. I now live at 300 foot elevation. And my Saab has a turbo. Zoom.
There's not much you can do to make up for the lack of air, whether your truck is mass air or speed density. The good news is that with the pedal on the floor, you're not getting as bad gas mileage as you would if you floored it at sea level.
