MIL P0302 But Plug/Coil Checks Okay??
5.4L 82,670 miles, started having the oft reported engine hesitation/misfire symptoms. Code reader reported P0302 (#2 cylinder misfire) to my relief and not the dreaded #4. Pulled #2 coil and plug, both check out okay, coil within ohm specs and plug grey/tan and not fouled. Pulled #1,#5,#6, #7 and #8 coils and plugs for comparison and all look exactly alike and coils within spec. I switched the coils and plugs on #1 and #2 on re-install. Engine ran fine initally but once warmed up started the familiar hesitation routine. The hesitation/misfire is very pronounced off idle and at most around town speeds but it has not thrown another error code. I suspect the #2 coil is bad but unable to confirm until the next error code occurs. Is there some other method to diagnose a weak/bad coil? (Other than spending $300 at the dealer).

I had the same issue and took it to the dealer. $150 later it was the COP. I could buy one at Autozone for $40. I reccomend the $40 COP and if that does not work then you know it is something bigger. Hold on to the new COP though. You will need it...sometime.

Without a scan tool (not a code reader) that can access Mode 6 data, all you can do is either wait for the MIL to come back on or to follow the advice of the new guy (whose advice is dead on).
You can usually force the MIL by finding a specific driving condition that exhibits the fault, then hammering away at it until you eventually force a DTC.
