The records can show the vehicle registration history, mileage, annual emissions/safety inspections, recalls, accidents, and flood damage/salvage titles. My old Mercury showed 11 entries (before I traded it) and it had never been wrecked. It was all registration/inspection information. I think that (overall) Carfax is a good tool for weeding out potential problem vehicles, but they use that "records in our database" as a sales generator.
I've had two carfax reports so far. The number of records is kind of misleading without the details of the report. For instance my truck had 6 records at the time of purchase and was never in an accident. The first time the car is registered, every puchase, title transfere, and manfac. recalls can each be a record on the report besides for the " reported accidents". So without the purchase of the report you really don't know anything. With that being said I personally think the report was worth the money and I would use the service again. GOOD LUCK!
I think it's worth the money if you're gonna spend some money on a car. I almost jumped on a '99 Ranger with 66K miles- only to find out it had 166K miles! I also looked at a 'flawless' Mustang that had a salvage title- it had been wrecked and rebuilt. At least you should be able to find out about major stuff- don't trust the buyer to disclose everything.
