No the 4X4's did not come from from the factory with a 390 in them. I worked in a Ford dealership wrenching in the mid 70's they came with 360's in the 4X4. But the 390 could be had in the 2 wheel drive trucks. We were always told it was a warranty issue, more things to break on a 4X4 with a little more horsepower & torque. But the 390 was easily swapped into them though, change the oil pan, pump & sump , hang your accesories and you were on your way, this was a popular swap. the motors are identical, the 390 was a stroked 360.
do you know if you have "java" enabled for your browser,or, if your browser even supports "java"? older versions of netscape like 3.0 don't support it,therefore some chat boards will not run.you just may need to edit your preferences, or, upgrade to netscape 4.0 or higher. i'm sure older versions of IE are like that also.

Hope you can shed some light. I have seen posted where guys get wrong info on motors and there ID numbers. As a Factory Ford mechanic can do you remember the mirror image 105 block in the 75 and 6 4xs in 360 cu in.? I have seen hundreads of them. Maybe you could help clear that up. ?
thanks phil for the chat input ,hey iknow 3 guys who between them ordered a f250 70,73, 76 who farmed and had the dough to buy what they wanted and they say it was impossible to order a 390 4x4.point blank! i can't argue with them.but others beg to differ with passion.but the guys who said they put 'em in also to my knowledge never seemed like the type who could have ever had money to order a new truck more less see an option list! talk to me boys. oleblue......
BigBrownTruck, 351W's were available from 75 to 80 to 81 in the two wheel drives, then they put them in the 4X4's.
Rick, sorry I remember nothing of the motor you mention. Thats been 20 plus years, 3 kids, almost 25 years of marriage, and many layoffs ago, and then many many years of working on heavy machinery, Bull dozers, Scrapers, Road graders,Huge off road coal trucks, Front-End Loaders, Draglines, Drills, Etc. Oh well its been fun though, Wouldn't trade it for nothing. Oh yeah and worked on the light vehicles we had for fleet vehicles, 2 1/2 ton trucks and down to 4X4 pickups, Bronco's and Blazers. I went to work in the coal mining industry in the late 70's.
I have a '77 F250 4x, and have the factory 400(351m, not 351c), and just blew it up. I am trying to up grade to a 460, but cannot find the brackets for any of the accessories (smog, air, alt, power steering pumps), do you have any idea on where these could be purchased? Please E-mail me, basspro@inreach.com
Tony, Ford changed to the 351M & 400 in mid 77 in the 4X4's. You could look for a 460 in a two wheel drive pickup, they were a factory engine in these trucks, the brackets will be right to use in yours, you will still have to solve the oil pan problem,as you probably know you will need the rear sump oil pan. there are places that have custom motor mounts to keep your engine towers and set the 460 on them. L&L products, Advance Adapters, I think these guys have complete kits to change them over,( brackets and all ) Did you not like the 400 engine? Another one of those shouldn't be to hard to turn up. Ones out of cars & 2 wheel drive pickups will set right in, you just need to change the oil pan, oil pump & sump, the long main bearing bolt stud combo that the long sump hangs from, the plug the dip stick hole in the front of the engine. Hang your brackets from your existing engine.
have you guys checked out Steve Christ's book How to Rebuild your Big Block Ford motor ? Its all about the FE's and only the FE's ...
Check your VIN if you think you have a 390 4x4 from the factory, I think you'll find your Vin has a Y in it indicating a 360 ...
The FE (390/360 etc) was available through 76, with maybe a very few 77's having them ...
As for the mirrored 105, that's an indication of a medium duty block, I have a 390 and a 360 with the 105 on them, and since they are the same bore, its not too surprising ...
Can anyone tell me if they've seen a 105 block that has both water pump passages being round? Mine both have a V shape on the bottom of the driver's side passage ... of course the pump doesn't do anything but block the bottom portion, but the notch is still there ...
