Wait for the Toyo's. Goodyear's tread compound is super-soft. Thick sidewalls, thin tread patch. Excellent for rocks, very poor for everyday drivers. Susceptible to penetrations.

I second the Toyo recommendation. The MTR's have had a history of out of round and are difficult to balance for some people. I am planning on running a set of Toyo's for my next set on the SD when my current tires wear out.

I had a set of Wranglers, and even though they could've lasted 70 - 80k, I replaced them well before that because they sucked -- impossible to balance well, possibly out of round. Had much better success with Bridgestone, and, umm, err, even with Firestone tires.

Yeah Goodyear seems to have quality control issue. When I use to race cars the car tires would not last or the belts would break in them. The truck tires seem to be out of round and you can't get them balanced right because of it. The MTR which is all the rage right now due to they seem to perform well on slick rock, but as threefiftyone mentioned they seem to be susceptible to penetration but from what I have heard it is more the sidewalls then the tread. The other issue with Goodyear tires is the price. They are expensive compared to other tires which are as good if not better performing. Toyo, BFG, Bridgestone, Cooper, Nitto (made by Toyo) all make good tires and are cheaper or the same price as a comparable Goodyear tire.

ended up going with the goodyears couldnt wait 4 months for the toyos.also went with the mojave teflon coated wheels. you were wright they couldnt balance them at first . the wheels dont have a outer flange for weights and when they tried stick ons they fell off the teflon. they ended up putting 4 ounces of what they called balancing sand in the tires. have about 500 miles on the tires up to 70 miles and they run real smooth. it cost almost 40 dollars for the compound but i really like the idea of not having any weights on the wheels.will have to see how they run in the future.

Glad to hear you are having good luck with the Goodyears. The balancing sand seems to work for some people. I had the Equal stuff in a set of 305/70R16 Baja Claw Radials and it worked for awhile, but when the tires started to get chopped up the Equal couldn't keep up.

Those Teflon wheels look great and it kind of figures that the weights would not stay on them. Keep us posted on how the tires and wheel do. BTW, how are you tearing up your driveway??

As I have 80 miles to the asphalt. I buy retreads. With the mud on the wheels after the first few miles balance is ridicules.

Richard - I wonder how the teflon wheels would work for you. That was the reason for their design. I have not heard reports back yet if it truly works or not. Get a set and let us know first hand!!

Well I could do that after the first of the year. Be nice to go to town and back in Mamas car and not have my frosty foaming at the mouth because of the vibration.
