I'm thinking of adding a keyless entry and remote starter to my 2000. Anyone have any problems with them? I've heard rumors that they can start fires but most rumors are just that. Thanx
The rumors are true if it is a really bad installation, but very rarely happens. Biggest worry about a bad installation is the damage that can be done to your vehicle. Are you installing it yourself or having it done? They are not to bad to do, just have to take your time and make sure that you do it right. If you are going to do it, let me know and I will get you the wire colors and where you need to look for each connection. I have done several and have not had any issues, but I take a lot of time and check everything twice before I actually hook into the wire.
I've not had any trouble with mine, but I had it professionally installed. As important as the installation, is the equipment because there is a lot of crap out there - you get what you pay for. That being said, I would only buy a brand made by DEI (Clifford, Viper, Avital). I have a Clifford Matrix remote start/alarm, and recommend it highly.
I got a price of $300 installed for a DEI Python system with the remote that beeps if you are in range so you don't have to see the car to know if it will start. Guess the guy bought 12 units for a $100 off summer deal. The kind without the beep is $305 so I'd obviously go for the upgrade.
Another dealer has an Astrostart system for $350 installed. They are well known in the area for stereo component installation and such. We used them for the system in the Durango and were satisfied.
The other shop is local and the vintage Vette shop I work at uses them for inspection stickers but no one has any experience with their accessories side.
What is the reason you like the DEI system over others? It seems the best deal and I feel pretty comfortable taking a risk with them, the guy seemed to know his stuff but I wonder why the other shop doesn't use DEI.
Jeepers, I'm rambling but I just want to be sure I do the right thing for my truck.
