Im going to try to buy this 79 f150. Id like to get an estimate for what to offer. Its got some good rust on the box but the frame looks good. It looks like it slid sideways into some smaller trees and dented/chiped the paint along alot of the passenger side and its starting to rust on these bigger chips. It looks like the front diferential is somewhat unistalled. Its lifted but the tires on it are barely tires at all. Im pretty sure it runs but im guessing its a stock M engine, and im sure its an oil burner. I was thinking about asking 500 bucks. What do you think i should tell him i could spend??
I tried to come up with a value on the '75 F-250 Camper Special I was interested in buying, that was fair to both the seller and me, and had a hard time. You might try searching for sites like Kelley Blue Book, Edmonds, etc. Most values they have don't go back as far as '75, maybe for a '79 you can find it easier to come up with what a buyer could expect to pay.
Probably when it comes down to prices with trucks this old is whatever the buyer & seller can negotiate between them. Each situation is different.

Price will vary greatly with the truck and the situation. I just bought my 79 F150 4x4 from a guy with too many toys and not enough time. Stock engine that is running, but not great. Brakes were shot, I had to do the entire brake system to make it safe. But the 4x4 works, and it runs and drives straight. Bed is rusted bad enough to need replaced, cab has a few spots of rust, but is saveable. He had 800 in the window. I bought it for $650 and we were both happy.

Reason: typo
The best reference is to watch your local paper and see what they are going for. Most of the time it depends how bad a guy wants to sell it. If its in his way and he wants it gone than it will be cheap I wouldnt be afraid to offer the guy 300 for it and I wouldnt give more than 500 for it if its a 4x4.
Putting a value on a vehicle that one can't : Inspect,Touch,Testdrive is impossible.
Here's what you do... Check the "book on lowest value" of a 27 year truck,
I say $500.00 for an example.
...... then add $$ according to things you wont have to replace to meet YOUR Needs.
Brakes,Body repair,etc
