im running motorcraft semi synthetic oil ...5w20 and i was wondering what filter i should use...im currentley using a k&n gold performance...is that ok or should i be looking at different oil and filter??? this is only my 2nd oil change....i know this is a dumb question but you will never learn if you dont ask...and you know what they say advice is like sex....take it when you can get it!!!
The standard Motocraft oil filters work just fine and they are inexpensive unless you purchase them at a dealer.
Other folk will recommend NAPA gold filters or any filter made by Wix. The top-of-the-line Fram filter might be OK as well - I'd pass on their bargain brand.
I had very good luck with Mobil 1 and Motocraft filter. I stay away from Fram do to stories that I have heard. I just traded my 03 5.4 in with 111000 miles on it and the engine ran as smooth as can be with 0 problems.
I also avoid Fram. I think most major brands are good enough but it won't matter if you have bad maintenance habits- i.e.- I'll change it later, set the new filter in the gravel driveway while installing, don't clean mounting flange, etc.
I think the ultimate setup would have a bypass filter system on it. For the sake of clarification "bypass" could mean two things.
- Some oil filters have a valve inside so that if your filter should become severely plugged it will still feed oil to the motot, but it won't filter it. Other oil filters don't have this feature and if they do plug, your oiling system won't feed anything.
- The other meaning of bypass is when a second filter is added to your system. It runs in parallel with your regular filter and uses a very fine filter element that catches stuff down to 1 micron or something like that. It's too restrictive to flow alot of oil so you can't just replace the stock one with the 1 micron element. I have heard that about 95% of the oil flow goes through the regular filter, and the other 5% goes through the 1 micron. This is the kind that I was recommending.
Also be aware that there are two schools of thought on the bypass system, some people feel that you can extend the oil change interval, others think you keep the same interval but the motor will last longer. I have seen posts of users here are running bypass systems and send the oil in for analysis at 10K, and it checks good.
It's an objective term, best. But if you want the best, find a Baldwin or FleetGuard filter for your motor. If you do some research, you'll see what I mean.
Napa's Gold (Wix) are good ones that are easier to find.

when you guys say fram oil filters arent any good....do you also mean fram air filters...because the plce i get my air filters only sell fram and k&n so i picked up a fram...
OK, I use the Airaid system which is made by/from the senior tech folks who left K&N due to that problem to start their own operation. Give it a look over . . .
