Flowmaster: The Right Series?

Hi guys, im new here and I get a simple question to ask.

I have a 1997 mercury mountaineer which is a V8, 5.0L, with GT-40 headers. Currently I have the stock stainless steel exhaust on it. I want to put a flowmaster muffler on it, but I don't know which one will sound right. People are telling me the 40 series, but theres 3 different kinds. I'm looking for something thats loud, deep, and will catch the attention, but at the same time sound good. Thanks for the help.

Matt

Smile Headers ?

Sounds like a good plan. My '75 250 SC has long-tube Flowmasters followed by an X-pipe and Thrush glas-paks. I wanted smooth but deep tone. It will rumble when U want to.

Should I get the original, standard 40 series or the 40 series delta flow?

Depends what you want. The Delta flow is supposed to have less interior resonance (aka won't be as loud inside) but you lose some outside sound too.

If you want loud deep and catch attention, get the regular one.

I run a 40 series, ended up cutting everything behind the muffler off and just welding on two turndowns so I could get the ever so loud set-car-alarms-off-in-the-Walmart-parking-lot sound I wanted.

Yeah I want it loud, attention catching loud, like you have it, but I don't want it to people to be like, why does this truck sound like a muscle car? I don't know, I just want it to sound deep, loud and mean.

50 series Delta. Good, low tone at idle that is more audible than stock, but not annoying. At 3,000, you will be noticed. Also, pull the 4 cats and only run 2. This will really open up the restriction and also add some sound.

Hey CobraXP, I like your explorer. And I like how you painted the body underneith the same color as the truck, thats what I want to do to mine, seeing as its grey now underneith and its ugly as hell! How much you pay to get it all painted the same color as the truck?

My X was solid white to begin with, but I fabricated the bumper fascias, the rear splash panels, and the wing. Then I monotoned everythig. Ran me a little over $5,000....

All I have are old pics. I don't have any since I changed it. Hopefully I'll get some pretty soon and add to my gallery....

40 delta flow will give you a snort and grunt you'll love. My only thought:

It may get a little annoying on the highway with internal resonance. I had a 40 Delta on a 5.4 F250SD and it sounded mean. In the truck, the muffler was far enough behind the cab that it didn't have ANY internal resonance.

I now have a '05 Explorer 4.6 V8. I wouldn't put the 40 on it. I would probably opt for the 50 series for reason outinled above.. But then again, I would do it for opening it up, not NECESSARILY for the sound. THat's just me, though.

Just my $0.05

One More Question..

does anyone know the stock in/out size of the muffler on a 1997 mercury mountaineer?
