Ok I have a 01' 250 7.3psd. I had absolutely no problems with it until I went on a 400 mile trip. When I got to my destination, the truck sat for about an hour. When we got in to drive away it was smoking black smoke pretty bad. It smelt like burning oil. I immediately had the oil changed (rotella 15-40) since then it hasn’t smoked as bad. It starts fine no problems there. Get up and go is good. It doesn’t smoke at freeway speeds, but when I sit at a stop light and idle, and then take of it bellows out the tail pipe. Occasionally I can smell it in the cab. After I drive down the road it seams to clear up or I guess it could be coming less noticeable. I took it in to a mechanic thinking it was the injector o rings and didn’t have time to change them myself. He said he didn’t think it was the o rings. He said there wasn’t any oil in the filter and the turbo looked good. He did say that the breather filter had oil on it and was really dirty. The only thing I have done to the truck since I bought it was put in a k&n filter. Oh and it has about 145k on the od. The mechanic thinks that the rings are a little dusted and that is what’s causing the burning oil. I haven't checked it an interval to see how much it’s using. I’m doing an oil change tomorrow and will check it after 100 miles to see how much it’s really burning. My other question is should I use an engine cleaner. I looked at one on the shelf and it said "not intended for turbo engines." Any help is greatly appreciated.
K&N filters don't seal worth a poop in the factory air box. They will let a lot of dust past the edges. If this is what you have your mechanic might be right about the rings being dusted. When my injector o-ring let go it smoked bad all the time!!
True black smoke is fuel smoke, blue/gray is engine oil. A very dirty filter could cause an increase in black smoke. Your K&N filter uses oil sprayed on it to aid in filtering. I also recommend getting rid of the factory filter box and if you want to go the inexpensive route, go with the 6637. It is a very popular mod here and easy to do. I also have to wonder, and I am probably wrong on this, but a very dirty air filter would cause more of a vacuum and I would think my pull more oil/fumes from you CCV. An yes I would, and do use an additive. I like Diesel Kleen, mainly because it is easy for me to find in my area. You do need to use one made for diesels. If you have trouble finding it, go to you local truck stop and you should have your choice. Good Luck.
That sounds exactly what happened to me 3 weeks ago. It turned out to be my turbo. The piston ring looking things that seal the shaft let go. Lots of blue smoke when idleing cleared up when I got moving.
Its blue/black smoke and has the classic burnt oil smell. It doesn’t smoke while idling; it’s when I take off. As far as fuel additive I use diesel kleen (white bottle). What I was asking was about was an oil flush. You poor it in let the truck run for 5 min then change the oil. Its suppose to clean out all the gunk in the engine. Thanks for all the replies I may go with the 6637 when I have time lol. I have been working 15 hrs a day for the last 2 months. Thanks again ill keep you posted if it changes.
