i have a 77 f250 highboy...and for some reason when i drive i can here a clankin sound actually sounds like metal ***** in a tin can.....its makin me crazy cause i cant figure it out....transmission? wheel bearings? i dont know! i know it doesnt have anything to do with suspesion cause when it still i jump on it up and down and no noise....only when im moving....i inspected my lockin hubs and hey arent the problem......i just recently actually 2 months ago rebuilt the top end and front end replacing the cam with a stock replacement.....could something have come lose? if it did would the truck kinda break down? in fixing my truck i replaced the cam, the timing gears and chain, all the seals obviously, valves, pushrods, new carb, new distributor, new starter coil, new ignition module, new spark plugs, new spark plug wires, new distributor cap, can sum1 help me!!!!! again its only when im rolling.....
The first thought that comes to mind, if it's when the truck being driven and the engine is under load, it could be pinging (predetonation). Does it sound like it's coming from the engine or somewhere else?
Ping/clatter/predetonation can sound like metal ***** in a tin can. You might try backing off a little on your timing though I don't know what your engine calls for as far as initial timing. My 351M (stock) calls for 12 degrees BTDC.
Does it stop if you apply the brakes? My '79 F250 4X4 had the front caliper springs break (the flat ones that slide in with the caliper keeper gizmo). Caused the calipers to rattle in the mounting so I built some spacers that solved the problem. Not sure if you can even buy the springs. If so, I'd like to know a source.
Does it only happen when you get up to speed or does it happen anytime you drive? If it does it at slow speeds have someone walk next to your truck as you idle down the road and see if they can tell where the noise is coming from. Since it only happens when you move check all drivetrain parts. U-joints, trans mount, t-case mount, motor mount...
i have found the answer!! my shock bolts came loose on the botom end of the shock on the passenger side and it was clangin around the axle...hehe kinda stupid huh? but im glad thats all that was....any way thanks alot guys.....
