I've had a very small power steering leak for a while now, it hasn't been a big deal and I figured that it was a loose connection somewhere but a couple days ago, I noticed that I'm getting leakage from the top of the steering gear, right where the intermediate shaft from the steering column meets the gear. I haven't pulled it yet, but from what I can see, everything else looks fine, no other leaks or signs of wear or damage and I'd like to avoid replacing the gear if I don't have to since they run over $200. Is it possible to just replace the gasket or whatever it is in the top of the gear where I'm getting a leak?
Inut shaft seal is leaking. Can be replaced but most people opt for replacing the entire rack with a rebuilt unit. They run around $75-85 at most parts stores. The AWD versions are the worst to replace. Otherwise, its not a difficult task. Might want to consider replacing tie rod ends at the same time since those have to be removed/replaced during rack replacement. First trip afterward is to the alignment shop.
Had a similar leak now for about a year. Very small but it makes a mess in that area.
Had a plan to pull the R&P this summer and replace it..... right about now. BUT........A/C in car #2 went out so I repaired it. Then yesterday 3 flats in the parking lot at work on tires with 10K miles. No foreign objects in tires , just several slits. But no damage at all to the tread. One tire has a couple of steel wires sticking ouy of the base of the tread. Heading to the dealer tomorrow to see if Bridgestone will adjust. Maybe I'll get to that rack and pinion next month!
