I recently bought a 29 ford pickup with , the old owner claims, a 429. I think its a 460. The block says DOVE-A on the passenger side, the heads say DOVE-C, and the block has a backwards "460" cast in the front, like a mirror image. Can someone give me an idea of the year/size of the engine? This thing's a blast and I'm curious as hell about the motor. Thanks!
429s and 460s use the same blocks and heads, with the exception of the hi performance heads (but even those can be put on a 460) the only difference in the engines is the stroke. you can get a very basic stroke measurement through the spark plug hole, if it's real close to 3-1/2" it's a 429 (3.59" is stock) if it's over 3-3/4" (3.85" for a 460) then it's the 460 but either engine will be a kick in the pants in something like that even bone stock.
One way is to flip the motor over and unbutton the pan. One of the crankshaft countrerweights has alphanumeric markings stamped on it's edge, and these markings identify whether it's a 429 or 460 crankshaft.
429 = 4U, 4UA or 4UAB
[*]
Also, for quick identification of the crankshaft, you may look for the nodule or embossment between the first main journal and counterweight. The 460 is embossed there, while the 429 is not (99% of the time): 429 460
Finally, I think the 1969 460 has slight dish in the pistons, while the 1969 429 has flat tops...but who knows what may be in there if you motor has been rebuilt...
Whichever it is, it's a great base model engine. But if it's been rebuilt, you pretty much need to look at the crankshaft specifically.
Wow, a ton of help from what seems to be a good bunch of guys. Thanks! So far this truck has been fun as hell. Right now I'm smoothing out the chop with lead, wheeee! I appreciate all the replies! Oh and if anyone's eyebrows get raised, that cowl is a little long, the body was a sedan that had been chopped and shortened into a truck. The bed is a '35. -Paulie
