I'm looking at a used truck to purchase. I'd like any input on what to look out for. Here's the specs.
1993 F-350 dually
7.3L Non turbo
200K miles
Power Everything
5spd
My questions are about the higher miles and how durable is the tranny?
Any thoughts/experiences?
He's asking $4500 but I'd probably start out by offering $3500 and going from there. The primary purpose of this truck will be towing my Wrangler on a 18ft trailer.
Start planning on purchasing the Banks Turbo kit for it if you get the truck. I had a '92 F250 and pulled my 30' Prowler with it. It pulled it ok, but dropped to 40-45MPH at the SIGHT of a hill!! After I installed the Banks turbo, it pulled those hills great. So, be prepared to spend another 1500-2000 bucks to make it go.
My tranny had to be rebuilt at 105,000 miles....so it's probably already been rebuilt once. My '92 sold a year ago for $7,000 with 140,000 miles on it.
I think I'd try to find a 95-99 before I bought that one.
Sounds like a good truck. That 7.3 is a heck of an engine. The United Parcel Service used to run 7.3s in all the big delivery trucks. They would go well over 500,000 miles. They still use 7.3s, but they are the T446E (7.3 powerstroke). And, are still going over 500,000 miles. You can't go wrong with the manual tranny. You won't even make that truck work with a jeep on an 18' trailer.
don't think he said it was a manual, kudos if it is. if not I'd plan on a tranny, a 7.3 will do 200k no sweat if taken care of, sounds like the rest of the truck has been well maintained but 200k just wears stuff out. $4k or so would be getting into a 7.3 pretty painless.
as bp mentioned, 95-99 are more desireable since they're allready turbo'd.
And a gasser would handle the jeep, the 7.3 won't even know it's there!
Thanks for the reply's. It is a manual. The main reason why I'm even considering this truck, is because eventually I'd like to buy a larger trailer so I can put both my Jeep and my GF's Jeep on there. I know the truck would handle it without any problems, just curious what the life span is and what to look for if I go and look at it.
