Oil Pump removal

I've never removed an oil pump before, is there much to this? I have my motor on my stand (just the block). I would like to replace it and not sure where it's located, not to sound like a rookie.

If you've got the engine out, it shouldn't be that big of a deal. Just remove the oil pan. Oil pump should be right there with two bolts holding it in.

Yeah, looks like I already had it out.

Personally, when I replace an oil pump I do not use a gasket between the pump and the block. I just make sure the surfaces are flat with no burs and bolt them together with no sealer at all.

Remember to put the pump driveshaft retainer clip on the top (distributor) end of the shaft. It is there to keep the shaft in place when the distributor is removed. The "teeth" point downward towards the pump. I usually bolt the shaft and retainer in with a washer between the retainer and block so that the block pushes the retainer clip down the shaft. I then remove the pump and remove the washer. This way the retainer is positioned about 1/16" away from the block when the pump is bolted back in.

Put The gasket in between the pump and the block ....when I had to pull my oil pump to get the distributor shaft lined up I noticed mine wasn't there either ...I put one in and it increased my oil pressure 5 pounds running down the road went from 35 to 40. There might be a small leak in there if you don't put it in.

If the surfaces are not burred the "leak" is insignificant. It would take a big leak or burr to lose 5lbs of oil pressure.
