Hey guys I have a 68 Three on the tree with my I-6.
Dont get me wrong the tranny seems to work flawlessly, however I have to travel in 60-70MPH zones all the time. With the three speed I hate winding the engine out so much, no to mention my gas mileage is sucking because of it.
I wont be doing much towing, just the ocassional run to home depot.
I'm very new to ford vehicles so I dont know all the transmissions options other then the C-6 and the T-5.
This isn't going to answer your question, but it may be of some help, so don't take it the wrong way, please. You have had some problems with the way the truck is running and I suggest you concentrate on those before you start jumping into tranny swaps. It seems by the other posts that you are trying to use the truck while making needed repairs so unless you plan to just tear the thing down and rebuild it all at once, get the needed safety and operating issues done first.
You do not have to change your transmission to get where you want to go. In fact, changing to another tranny with a 1 to 1 high gear ratio will not change anything. You need to change out your rear end ratio to make the engine turn less RPM at highway speeds.
The only way to do this with the transmission is to install an overdrive type - where the final ratio is about .7 to 1.
You likely have to Ford 9 inch rear end - if so, changing the punkin is just an afternoon's job. You can buy punkins with a ratio more suited to your needs. I expect you will like a ratio anywhere between 2.73 and 3.25 - depending on how you drive.
What is your rear end ratio now? If you do not know, there should be a tag on one of the bolts holding the punkin, or the original axle code is shown on the door post data plate.
That is sort of low, unless you are running real big tires. You can slow your engine down by 20% by going with a 3.10 ratio, which I use in my truck. I would do this before I messed with the transmission.
My two cents. Change the gear ratios. It's a lot cheaper than buying an OD unit.
If you're not towing all the time (which I do) you don't need that 3:70 rear.
Either 3:10's for plain cruising or a 3:23-3:33 if you're going to be towing light stuff, like a camper.
New OD units for the manual tranny are almost 3,000 dollars. That's a bunch of gears
