I have developed a bad coolant leak on my '01 7.3. It appears to be coming from the water pump as its dripping directly from the crank pulley. It holds temp fine when driving so its a real slow leak. Has anyone had any leaks like this?
its the water pump. just had mine replaced at 205,000. get a new thermostat and dont forget the the coolant additive/conditioner.
dont wait to long. diesels dont like to be overheated at all!!!!!!!! dont trust the idiot light/guage. mine never got above3/4 but had lost alot of fluid. kept refilling and rolling till i noticed it moving up.
noticed it leaking on the last trip at first stop. drove another 100 miles and puddle underneath. within 25 more miles it was slinginging it against the hood and fenders. $460 out the door at a dealer(big rapids,mi) on memorial weekend fri afternoon. He also wrote up the ticket for less than 100,000 miles. he said it was cheaper. so i didnt argue.
Thanks for the info. I just hit 82k miles so its hard to believe the pump is bad already. Some of the bolts were loose so I'm hoping just the gasket went bad. I'm going to pull it off this weekend and see how it looks. My repair CD also mentioned a gasket for the block heater so maybe I'll check that also but the leak really looks to be coming from the pump. My dealer said $290 for a new pump so thanks for the thread on the one for $100.
Front seal around the pulley shaft went bad on mine about 60K. The water would come out as fast as you put it in. Couldn't even drive it. Had to have it towed to the shop.
Hey, is the water pump covered under the 5yr, 100,000 mile warranty? Just a thought. You maybe past that.

Reason: spelling
My 5 yr 100k expired this April so I'm now on my own. A front pulley seal would make sense from where the leak is coming from. The 5 yr 100k warranty has a deductible of $100 anyway so if I can get a new pump for $109 its not a bad deal. Time to break out the wrenchs and ice down a few cold ones!
I read in a Ford shop manual not to put radiator stop leak in these systems. Ford even sells a powder to dissolve the stuff. I saw a picture of a replacement water pump and it looks like there's 3 or 4 o-rings that come with it. I think I'll go ahead and pull mine off and see whats there. I want the thing fixed as i'm going on vacation early August and will be towing/hauling in 100+ degree heat in rural areas so I don't want to break down.
Make sure you torqued the bolts to 18 lbs-ft, some old Ford manuals have them at 35 lbs-ft and you will snap the heads right off. When I got mine at Carquest, the o-ring for the inlet pipe they had listed was the same as the t-stat housing. Worked better then the little o-ring in the box. Couple hour job is the fan clutch comes off easy. Good luck!
Go with the napa refurbished for $110....guarantee for a year. Don't forget the o-ring replacement on the downpipe....i did and leaked all over the place! Fan clutch is definately the hard part.
If you have to replace the water pump, you might want to replace the T-stat housing with a billet alluminum at the same time. My old housing was rusted and I have seen a lot of them leak.
