I'm new to the board, new to diesels, and also new to Fords. Just bought a '99 F 550, with the 7.3 PSD and a custom hauler bed. Plan to haul six horses from New York to Oklahoma in October, and know from experience with my Chevy that a few key parts in the truck can be the difference between getting there on time and getting there a week late.
If you were prepping for a long haul like this what would the "gotta have" back-up parts be?
Spare CPS - in the glove box for starters + 10mm socket, extension & rachet
Fuel Filter - never know when you might run into bad fuel
Serp Belt - just in case
Gal Antifreeze & Gal Oil Jug - for top off's
Portable air compressor + Flat tire repair kit (Reamer, plugs, lube & trimming tool) - never know when a flat will get ya - not a must have in my book but, handy if you are traveling a lot at night when things might not be open.
CPS for sure, but the rest of the parts dagren suggested are good to have too. I'd also take some good quality fuel treatment, like the Diesel Kleen or Stanadyne. You'll probably be able to find is most places, but you never know, and you never know what kind of places you'll have to stop to get fuel along the way.
Might sound like a no brainer but make sure you carrier spare fuses. The mini fuses under the dash are easy to remember. Might forget about the ones under the hood. I got caught without a spare to replace the big fuses under the hood when my trailer lights shorted out.
