i have 2 74f100s with 390s. one i have converted from points to pertronix with "flame thrower" coil. simple and it starts lots faster and has better throttle responce. the other truck has duraspark--engine and all wiring are from a 75 or 76. i want to convert it to pertronix so both trucks are the same and to help clean up eng compartment. maybe i'm nuts. i know i'll need a points dist and coil to start with. from there, can i just cut the wires associated with the duraspark box and run a 12volt wire for pertronior what ever the directions will show)?
You will find all the info you need about this in the electrical forum.
There are numerous threads there already and Franlink or psarky will help greatly.
This question is more electrical/ignition than it is 73-79 truck related.
Yes, do away with all the wires except the coil + wire. Keep it. Then hook the pertronix wire to the negative of the coil, and hook the + wire of the pertronix to the + of the coil.
Your duraspark II has a resistor in the coil + wire. If the pertronix instructions say that is alright, then you are ok. If they say you need to get rid of the resistor, then you can tape off the original coil + wire, and run a new one from the fuse box, or use the one from the old duraspark II bothe wire that goes to the red wire on the module).
