Since my A/C doesn't work and i don't care if it gets fixed. would i be able to pull of 1 of the idle wheels and get a belt for a non A/C truck. because then it would bypass the A/C compressor. if i can, how much horsepower would that add roughly? (the HP doesn't really concern me but it's more out of curiosity.)
Not any extra horsepower. You might free up a TINY TINY bit of resistance in normal, non A/C operation, and you obviously won't have the A/C dragging the engine down when it's running. That would be the noticeable part. I do believe you can just bypass and run a no-A/C belt, since in '91 it was just an option. I think on my 4.0L it's a straight shot from the idler to the PS pump pulley even with the A/C pulley in the way. At worst you're lookin' at having to remove the A/C pulley.
Willie: if you have the 4.0 you don't need to remove anything and you don't really need to unplug the compressor. All you need to change is the serpentine belt. Get the one for the truck without ac. The part number for the Goodyear serpentine belt is: 805K6. This is the one for the 4.0 and it's a direct replacement belt to bypass the ac compressor pulley without having to remove the pulley. The belt goes right under the pulley by a good distance in a straight shot from the tensioner to the power steering pump pulley and has the right amount of tension on it. This is what I did when my ac compressor pulley bearing went out early last winter on my 91 4.0. Since the compressor wasn't turning anyway I felt no need to unplug it and all the heat, defrost and venting worked normal. What engine do you have? You may be able to do something similar with the engine you have or remove just the ac belt if you have a multi belt system like on the 2.9 V6. Let us know.
