'79 F150 4x4 automatic, gear-box in front of the front axle on the frame.
I dunno what it's called, but the collar around the steering column that the shifter hangs off of.
It's broked. It's completely free of the interior, and the housing that holds the shift-lock pin is shattered.
The junkyard tells me that the steering colum is 78-79 only and $200, so my immediate solution is to swap steering columns with my other project truck. Long-term, I'm going to need a column for the project truck.
Would I be increasing my options to tear the column apart and replace the broken part(s) out of a different, more common, hopefully cheaper column or would I have to be lucky enough to find a 78-79 column that was bad for some other reason?
The shifter collar for 78-79 non-tilt columns is available. You're looking at about a $25.00 part. I know LMC Truck carries them. There are other vendors as well. Check the FTE store too.
It's a fairly common-failure part. Can be replaced while the column is still in the truck. Not a complicated fix if you take your time and are observant when you disassemble.
