I bought a 1986 f-350 with a 460 and a c-6 I live in Georgia and the truck was in Maryland. The truck did fine all the way until 10 miles from the georgia state line no signs of a problem. I was hauling my car with a tow dolly running 65-75mph's all the way and without any warning whatsoever it was if I put it in neutral. Got it to the side of the highway put it in 4 wheel drive got it to the next exit and had it towed home. I ran it the following day and it ran up and down the road no problems except it now grinds when you put it in park.I assume that the parking paw has a issue but I need some advise on maybe what has happened. thanks so much scott dove.
If the truck still moves with the 4wd engaged, I would think something is wrong in your T-case or in the rear axle. Was the truck still in 4wd when you moved it around at home? Is it possible the T-case slipped into neutral during your trip? The grinding into park could be a side effect of being in 4wd. My truck does the same thing sometimes until I put the tranny in neutral, t-case into 2-hi, and then into park. Sometimes I just shut the truck down, get everything where it should be and then I am good to go. You may have sheared the splines in your rear driveshaft, or in the axle.
If the tcase is in nuetral the trans is spinning even if the vehicle is at a complete stop and it will grind when going into park, I would agree with sycostang your tcase is the likely culprit here probably not holding in 2hi for some reason possibly nothing more than teh linkage being out of adjustment.
