I have a 1999 expedition with 154,000 and my transfer case is acting wierd. I had to remove my front drive shaft just so I could drive my truck. I have the electric shift of course and I have checked to see if it was in 2H or not and it was. I also pulled the fuse because as soon as it is in it felt like it was in 4h. A while back it did this and I took it out and got it to break free. Whats happening is is when i go to turn anywhere (worse in parking lots) it acts like a front tire is locked up and it will hop around really bad and pop and then just locks up. When it does this I have to back up to get it to break free. What is causing this? I really dont want to spend the money on a new one but im not sure what the deal is.
Welcome Salivadfc! You pretty much have the diagnosis down pat. It certainly sounds like the front wheels are engaged. You've learned that backing it up disengages it too.
There is an electromagnet that engages the clutches in the t-case and it seems like the clutches are failing to disengage. To my knowledge there is no mechanical connection, soley electrical. I believe a fluid chang will help rectify the situation.
