Electric Wipers

I have a 56 250 and my vacuum wipers quit on me (of course it was while I was trying to get home in the rain) I decided to convert to electric wipers. I have an old parts truck that had a motor and associated linkage that were in good condition. I did have to purchase a new switch(~$40...whew!) My problem is I can't get the wipers to "park" in the down position. The shop manual shows 4 wires coming out of the motor, however my motor only has 3.(?) When I sut off the swich the wipers "park" ~half way down the windshield.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Clarence

Can you adjust the linkage to adjust where the park position is? Can you reposition the wiper arams on the shafts to adjust them lower down the windshield? I think if the wipers actually shut off (park) then the problem is a manual adjustment somewhere and not an electrical issue.

Good luck

I replaced the vacuum wipers on my 56 with a motor from a 79 F-150. It turned out to be a real chore. I ended up fabbing not only under dash wiper arms but also a bell crank. However I must say that it works and parks perfectly. Also I used the intermittent switch and governor. In your case I agree with the other guys I think you problem is in the adjustment. Unless and it is a possibility that you have a bad wire or connection on your parts truck wiper motor.

Well, we finally got some rain out here in the desert. I guess I better move "fabbing electric wipers" up higher on my "to do" list.

Got it! I appreciate all the responses. I had to purchase a new motor and it came with instructions on how to "mechanically" set the wipers park position. It's amazing how easy things become when you have instructions!! Thanks

Cool! Glad to hear that it worked out for you.

on a side note....I still havent finished fabricating my dual wiper linkage. I've been lookign around trying to find an original 48-50 wiper linkage set up (at least thats my excuse)

speaking of this.. my truck has never run yet and i havent done the wiring.. how do i know if the motor is electric of vacuum?

The only wires i see coming from it go to a switch (and i think there is an extra for power).. but i am not sure..

LOL...I'm going way out on a limb here....

if it has wires, its electric
if it has a vacuum line, its vacuum

Sorry, couldn't resist.

The vacuum wiper motors have a destinctive half moon shape to them.

If the motor is round and about the size of a soup can they're electric. As Bobby says the vaccuum motors look like a 1/2 moon with a tube for the vaccuum hose. There are also typically controlled by a cable rather than electrically, so if your wiper switch has wires or terminals for wires that's another good indication they're electric.

i havent really looked :P i was just curious. I am guessing it is electric then because there are wires going to the switch and not a cable

You have to be alittle carefull there also. I had a 59 Ranchero that had electric wipers but they were controlled by a cable.
The **** inside the cab had a cable that ran to the wiper motor and actuated a slide switch (but there were wires running from the motor)

Basically,

Round soup can with wires---electric
half round with vacuum line---vacuum

Wipers? we don't need to steenkin wipers

Hi guys, I'm curious, can you adapt the electric wiper motor to be intermitent? Can you tell me if there's a kit for this or a list of parts from a doner vehicle. John

Bobby, we get about 60" of rain here annually. We have REAL good wipers!
